What a load of bollocks! The merits or ramifications of this speech are almost bound to be forgotten in the frenzy of media spin that surrounds them. Analysts and commentators are going ape in Ireland today because Enda Kenny said some straightforward and sensible things about how shocking it is that one nation state tried to intrude on another nation state’s investigations into child sex abuse. Forget that the meddling manipulative nation state was the Vatican City and the accused were Catholic priests.

Forget for a moment that on a basic level this is political grandstanding that allows the Taoiseach to be clapped on the back by people. His speech is most notable because it is constitutes the kind of speech that someone who loved the church would make.

… the Cloyne Report excavates the dysfunction, disconnection, elitism….the narcissism …….that dominate the culture of the Vatican to this day. The rape and torture of children were downplayed or ‘managed’ to uphold instead, the primacy of the institution, its power, standing and ‘reputation’. Far from listening to evidence of humiliation and betrayal with St Benedict’s “ear of the heart”… the Vatican’s reaction was to parse and analyse it with the gimlet eye of a canon lawyer.
This calculated, withering position being the polar opposite of the radicalism, humility and compassion upon which the Roman Church was founded.

Church leaders should be using this language. The collapse of the church is highlighted not simply in her moral disgrace but that she is so obsessed with political power that politicians are more effective voices of leadership than the ones in power.
