It surprised me how distant the time of Rabbit, Run felt to me. But time crawls by. Rabbit, Run is set 60 years ago. Springsteen released Greetings From Asbury Park almost 40 years ago. I am aware of how I am getting old. And Rabbit Angstrom is my age in this book. I am not sure if it is a story about finding himself or a story about the inevitability of getting lost if our only reference point is “our heart”. It is at times achingly beautiful. It is slow. It is plotted with surprising expertise. And ultimately it is unsatisfying. But I think it is designed to be.
