Hauerwas says things that keep me awake at night.

Money is an empty signifier that is a mode of exchange that creates an abstraction that gives me the illusion that the more I’ve got, no one’s hurt. And so I do think how to demystify in the Marxist language the “fetishization of money” is a major challenge for Christians today. Another name for money is loneliness. “If I have enough of it, I don’t need anyone.” And exactly what Christianity is is training in being dependent and needy. So money’s a problem.
